Information, not instruction
The bench notes describe what was done to particular pieces, with particular products, in a particular workshop. Timber species vary, finishes vary, formulations change without notice, and the piece in front of you is not the piece described here. Nothing on this site is professional advice, instruction or a guarantee of result.
Solvents, strippers and safety
Refinishing involves flammable, toxic and caustic materials, airborne dust and electrical tools. You are responsible for reading the manufacturer's instructions and safety data sheet for every product you use, working in adequate ventilation, wearing the protective equipment the manufacturer specifies, and complying with local disposal and fire regulations. This site gives no medical advice. If you are exposed to a chemical, contact your local poison control centre or emergency services; do not rely on anything written here.
Your own pieces
Some furniture should not be refinished. Stripping a piece with historical or commercial significance can destroy most of its value. Deciding whether a piece is in that category is your responsibility, and a conservation professional is the right person to ask.
Intellectual property
The text, the exploded-diagram plates and the stylesheets on this site are the work of the site owner. You may quote short passages with a link back to the record they came from. Do not republish whole records, do not reuse the plates in commercial material, and do not scrape the site to train or seed another publication.
